Top 10 beaches in Mexico

Everyone has heard about the beaches in Mexico and honestly, they’re famous for a reason. I feel incredibly lucky to have been born in this beautiful country, and even luckier to have spent most of my life living by the ocean. I truly can’t imagine being away from the Mexican Caribbean for too long. The turquoise water, the warm air, the summer weather that never ends, the sunsets, to me, it’s what paradise looks like.

Mexico is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From the Pacific coast with it’s dramatic crashing waves and coastlines with cliffs to crystal-clear Caribbean waters that barely look real, every beach has its own energy and personality. Some are peaceful and slow, others are vibrant and social, but all of them make you fall in love with Mexico a little more.

There are so many incredible beaches here that narrowing it down to just 10 honestly felt impossible, but these are the ones that always stay on my mind. Coming from a beach girlie who knows these beaches by heart, these are the Mexican beaches I think everyone should experience at least once.

Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres

My personal favorite. Isla Mujeres never fails to amaze me no matter how many times I visit. There’s something about this beach that feels magical every single time. The sunsets here are truly out of this world — honestly the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen, not only in Mexico, but anywhere. The sky turns every shade of pink, orange, and gold while the water stays perfectly turquoise.

The beach is always warm, sunny, and full of life. There’s music playing somewhere, people walking barefoot with sandy hair after a beach day, golf carts driving around the island, and everyone just seems happy to be there. It’s one of those places that instantly puts you in a good mood.

Balandra Beach, La Paz

I remember arriving at this beach so clearly. I drove from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz, and even the highway views were already incredible, so I was more than happy. But the moment I arrived at Balandra and hiked up a small cliff to see the view from above, I was honestly speechless.

It’s truly one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life. The contrast between the mountains, the desert landscape, and the crystal-clear blue water almost doesn’t look real. I wanted to sit there for hours just staring at the view, but considering I went in April and the sun was absolutely brutal, I probably would’ve gotten a third-degree burn.

When I finally went down to swim, I was surprised by how shallow the water was. You can walk so far into the ocean while the water stays calm and clear around you. Compared to the deeper beaches in Los Cabos, Balandra felt peaceful and almost unreal. Definitely a beach everyone should experience at least once.

Isla Holbox

I fell in love with Holbox from the moment I arrived. It’s a quirky little island that feels completely different from the rest of Quintana Roo. The vibe feels more local, more authentic, more like an adventure than a typical resort vacation. Sandy streets, colorful little restaurants, beach bars, sunsets every evening — everything about Holbox feels relaxed and carefree.

My favorite beach in Holbox is Playa Mosquito. The water is incredibly shallow and clear, and during sunset the whole beach turns soft shades of pink and gold. It feels peaceful, almost untouched. My second favorite is Punta Coco, especially for slower afternoons and sunsets after a long beach day. You have the sun setting by the ocean on this beach, it’s magical. Holbox is one of those places that makes you forget about time completely.

Playa Carrizalillo, Puerto Escondido

Playa Carrizalillo feels like a hidden little paradise tucked between cliffs and palm trees. You have to walk down a long staircase to get there, but the second you see the water it’s completely worth it. Unlike the bigger waves Puerto Escondido is known for, Carrizalillo has calmer water that’s perfect for swimming and beginner surfing.

The beach itself feels cozy and tropical, with little restaurants above the cliffs and surfers spending all day in the water. It’s one of my favorite beaches on the Oaxaca coast because it feels peaceful while still having so much life around it. Definitely my favorite in Puerto Escondido, through the whole town is amazing.

Cancún, Quintana Roo

I know Cancun is one of the most talked-about beach destinations in Mexico, and in the world even, but honestly, the beaches deserve every bit of the hype. The color of the water here is something I don’t think I’ll ever get used to, no matter how long I’ve lived here. Some days the ocean looks almost fluorescent turquoise under the sun.

What I love about Cancun is that you can have the perfect balance between beautiful beaches and fun plans. Beach clubs, boat days, amazing restaurants, nightlife, luxury hotels — there’s always something happening. It’s one of the best places for a girls trip because you truly get a little bit of everything.

The sand is always warm and soft, the waves are playful but never too intense, so you can almost always go in for a swim. There’s something about the beaches in Cancún that instantly makes you feel lighter. Honestly, it’s hard to feel sad at a beach in Cancun.

I know Cancún like the back of my hand, and I know how lucky I am to be able to say that. I’ve grown up surrounded by these beaches, these sunsets, this ocean, and somehow it still never gets old to me. I feel incredibly lucky to call such a beautiful place home.

Playa del Amor, Nayarit

Playa del Amor, also known as the Hidden Beach, feels like something from a movie. The beach is hidden inside a cave-like opening surrounded by rocks, and getting there already feels like an adventure on its own.

Seeing the sunlight come through the opening above while the waves crash into the beach below is such a surreal experience. It’s one of the most unique beaches in Mexico and definitely one of those places that stays in your memory forever.

Tulum, Quintana Roo

Tulum has such a unique energy to it. It’s one of those places where everything feels slower, intentional, and beautiful. Jungle restaurants hidden between palm trees, beach clubs by the ocean, bikes everywhere, slow mornings, and the Caribbean sea always just a few steps away.

I love that Tulum became such a huge destination almost out of nowhere. I knew Tulum before all the hype, when it was much smaller and quieter, and honestly, it was beautiful then and it’s still beautiful now. Even with how much it has grown, it never lost the feeling that makes it special.

What I find so interesting about Tulum is how its name alone immediately creates a feeling in people’s minds. Anywhere in the world, you say “Tulum” and people instantly picture the vibe — jungle luxury, turquoise beaches, wellness, barefoot dinners, glowing skin, salty hair, and freedom. Very few places in the world have created such a recognizable atmosphere attached to their name, and Tulum absolutely has.

The moment you arrive at that beach strip, you feel completely disconnected from the world. Days feel slower there, and somehow life feels softer too.

Playa El Médano, Cabo

Playa El Médano has such a fun, energetic vibe to it that makes you instantly want to stay out all day. Compared to the calmer Caribbean beaches, Cabo feels a little more dramatic and alive in the best way possible. The ocean, the desert mountains, the boats everywhere, the music coming from the beach clubs — everything feels exciting there.

One of my favorite memories in Cabo was spending the day at Mango Deck Restaurant & Beach Club. It was honestly one of the most fun beach club experiences I’ve ever had. Music playing all day, everyone dancing, drinks by the ocean, games, people laughing everywhere. The whole beach felt so alive and carefree. It’s impossible not to have fun there.

What I loved most about Medano Beach though was the landscape around it. At the end of the beach, you can see these giant rock mountains rising out of the ocean, and at night they looked almost spooky in the most beautiful way. I remember staring at them after sunset when they turned completely pitch black against the dark sky. It felt so dramatic and unreal, almost like a movie scene.

Cabo has this really unique mix of beautiful beaches, nightlife, nature, and adventure that makes it feel completely different from anywhere else in Mexico. It’s one of those places that stays in your mind long after you leave.

Playa El Cielo, Cozumel

Playa El Cielo truly lives up to its name because it honestly feels like heaven. The first time I went there, I remember looking at the water and thinking it couldn’t possibly be real. The ocean is the clearest shade of blue I’ve ever seen, so transparent that you can see straight to the bottom the entire time.

One of the most magical parts about El Cielo is seeing the starfish resting on the white sand below the water. There are so many of them, and because the ocean is so crystal clear, it almost feels like floating above an aquarium. Everything about this place feels peaceful, soft, and surreal.

One of my favorite ways to experience El Cielo is by yacht or boat. Spending the day out on the water, surrounded by endless shades of turquoise while the sun reflects on the ocean around you, feels like something out of a dream. The water is calm and shallow, perfect for snorkeling, jumping in, floating around for hours, or just laying on the boat watching how unreal the scenery looks.

There’s something about El Cielo that makes you completely disconnect from reality for a while. It’s quiet, beautiful, and almost hard to describe unless you’ve seen it yourself. For a few hours, it truly feels like you’re floating somewhere between the ocean and heaven.

Mahahual, Quintana Roo

Mahahual feels like one of Quintana Roo’s best-kept secrets. It’s quieter, slower, and much more peaceful than places like Cancun or Tulum, which is exactly what makes it so special. The moment you arrive, everything feels calmer. The ocean is warm and incredibly clear, the breeze always smells like salt and sunscreen, and life there moves at its own pace.

One of the most beautiful things about Mahahual is the arrecife. The Mesoamerican Reef, which is the second biggest coral reef system in the world, runs right along the coast, making the water perfect for snorkeling and diving. You can swim surrounded by colorful fish, coral, and the kind of marine life that reminds you how unreal the Caribbean really is. Even from the shore, the shades of blue in the water are stunning.

What I love most about Mahahual is how authentic and comforting it feels. Small beach clubs made of wood right on the sand, locals riding bikes along the malecón, fresh seafood everywhere, music playing softly in the background while the sun starts setting. It’s the kind of place where you spend the whole day barefoot without even realizing it.
